Chat Agent and Email Support Jobs
More and more companies are moving towards customer service and support via chat and email. In fact, some companies don’t even have an option to call them — you’ve got to use chat or email to get in touch. You’ve probably seen the “Chat Now” box on many websites you visit.
Chat agents and email reps provide customer service and sales support as well as answer any general inquiries. Really, it all depends on the company and the nature of their business. But, either way, working as a chat agent or email rep are great non-phone jobs you can do from home.
Live Sales Staff – This company provides email and chat support services to businesses. Scroll down to the bottom of the
About Us page to see if they’re currently hiring at-home chat and email reps. If they are, you’ll have to contact them via their online chat platform and submit a resume to their HR department.
Ibotta – Ibotta is an app that gives users cash back for everyday purchases. Users upload images of their receipts showing qualifying purchases and, once verified, money is credited to their account. To help process these receipts and respond to user emails, Ibotta hires email support reps from time to time. While this is a remote position, you will need to be local to
Denver, CO for training and occasional team meetings!
Meet Edgar – A social media scheduling tool for busy bloggers and swamped solopreneurs, Edgar is a fully remote team that has email support positions open from time to time. Keep an eye on their
hiring page to see when this (and other super cool jobs) are available.

MyLivePro – It’s no surprise that MyLivePro is very rarely hiring — their chat agent jobs are so popular that when people get in here, they stay put. This low turnover rate means limited opportunity to get your foot in the door here. Nonetheless, they hire on occasion and are always adding new clients to their roster which means the possibility of work as they continue to grow.
Needle Pin Cushion – When you become a Needler, you get to chat with people shopping on your favorite retailers’ websites. This is more of an extra income opportunity but can be a fun way to make money while building your own schedule and advocating on behalf of your most-loved brands!
OkCupid – Several times a year OkCupid, an online dating site, has opportunities for email support reps. This mostly involves answering client questions and dealing with billing issues. On occasion you
mighthave to place a call to a customer for a particularly tricky inquiry — but these are few and far between.
Site5 – Site5, aka World Wide Web Hosting, is a global hosting provider. They hire chat agents to assist their clients when they have questions about their hosting accounts. Often, when they are hiring chat agents, there are several shifts available for both morning, day and evening/overnight chat agents. As a bonus, this is an employee position that comes with some pretty great benefits.
SiteStaff – Although SiteStaff isn’t always hiring Chat Hosts, they are always accepting applications. So, if this is something you’d really like to do, it might be worth throwing your hat into the ring — who knows? Maybe your application will knock their socks off and they’ll make room for you on their team!
Data Entry
Of all the non-phone jobs out there, data entry is probably the most popular of them all. The problem is, there just aren’t a whole lot of legitimate data entry jobs to be found. And when you do find data entry gigs, they are often seasonal or have low pay. I don’t say this to discourage you — rather, I want you to have realistic expectations when it comes to at-home data entry work
DoorDash – DoorDash is making it easier for diners to get food from their favorite restaurants delivered directly to their doors. They keep a database of menus from restaurants from around the country and, on occasion, hire data entry workers to key these menus into their database.
This is location based — typically, you’ll have to train in Atlanta or San Francisco before you can work from home!
Dion Data – Dion Data is always accepting applications for their data entry positions but this doesn’t mean they’re always hiring. If they are hiring, you will receive an email from them letting you know you meet their qualifications.
The Smart Crowd – Formerly Virtual Bee, The Smart Crowd is part of a much larger global company called Lionbridge. There is almost always data entry work to be keyed here, but the pay is low — very low. It would take quite a bit of keying to make even $10.00. And you’ve got to bank at least $30.00 in order to receive payment — a number that can be difficult to reach at such low rates.
SigTrack – This is seasonal data entry work. When they are accepting new applicants, there’s usually quite a bit of work to go around but when work dries up, there’s usually not another project available for a while. In other words, you cannot count on SigTrack as being a steady income stream.
Upwork – If you’re serious about making money from home with data entry work, you might want to consider signing up at Upwork. I often see data entry gigs posted here, many of which can turn into longtime gigs if you perform well.
Editing and Proofreading Jobs
Editing and proofreading are two distinct parts of the writing process — and even though they’re different, they often go hand in hand when it comes to companies that hire editors and proofreaders. So, to avoid being redundant, I’m going to list them all together here. It’s also worth mentioning, editing and proofreading jobs might require previous experience or specific education requirements.
If you don’t have experience as a proofreader but want to break into the industry, I recommend checking out Proofread Anywhere where you can take a
free 7-day Intro Course and decide whether or not a career as a transcript proofreader is right for you (even if you don’t have an English degree!).
Kibin – When you become a Kibin editor, you’ll have access to proofreading and editing assignments. Clients submit work any time, day or night, so you could potentially login and find work 24/7.
ProofreadingServices.com – To get in here, you’ll have to pass a 20-minute test. From there, you can set your own schedule and choose full-time or part-time work.
Domainite – I’ve known a few inexperienced editors who have gotten in here at Domainite — but you’ve got to edit a sample piece of work to demonstrate your chops. The pay rate here is on the lower side, but it might be worth it to gain experience.
Book In A Box – This is a nontraditional editing job that helps people who want to write books express their thoughts in writing. You’ll need experience to be considered for this gig that usually pays more than $20.00/hour.
Editor World – To become an editor at Editor world, you’ll need to pass a test to demonstrate your abilities before you get any paid work.
Wordy – Set aside some time when you go to apply for an editor position at Wordy — it’ll take you about an hour from start to finish. If you get accepted, you’ll gain access to a pool of work that is claimed by editors on a first come first serve basis.
Gramlee – Gramlee is always interested in hearing from “exceptional editors.” At Gramlee, clients are promised 24-hour turnaround times on most projects — this means work may be available around the clock.
Scribendi – Scribendi is a community of online editors and proofreaders. It’s important to mention, they have some pretty strict requirements and preferred qualifications for their editors. They do have training classes available that cost money (unless you work for them, then they’re free). Keep in mind, these paid courses are not a guarantee of employment and will not help your chances of being hired on here
English Trackers – Editing jobs at English Trackers mostly involves academic papers. As such, you’ll need an advanced degree to meet their preferred qualifications and two years prior experience!
Sibia Proofreading – If you have previous experience editing and proofreading as well as knowledge of APA, MLA, Chicago and other style guides, you might have good luck getting in at Sibia.
Hello Essay – As you may have guessed by the name, there’s a lot of academic editing and proofreading work to be found at Hello Essay. You’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree to be considered — preference given to those who graduated from a “top-tier university.”
Polished Paper – To prove your editing chops, you’ll need to pass a 35-question editor’s test at Polished Paper. Previous experience will help you do well and so will familiarity with various style guides.
ProofreadingPal – ProofreadingPal has two proofreaders go over each document — to be one of these proofreaders, you’ll need to either be a graduate student or hold a master’s degree. Editors can expect to make anywhere from $500-$3,000/month depending how much they work.
Wordvice – This is another company that requires proofreaders to have at least a graduate degree to be considered for employment. If you qualify, you’ll gain access to a variety of work ranging from business to academic, and everything in between.
Cactus Communications – Have experience in a particular subject or academic field? Consider signing up for a proofreading position at Cactus Communications where you can put your expertise to work as an editor.
Moderator Jobs — Social Media & Community Forums
Businesses and brands have pretty impressive social media followings — and with such large audiences, it means a lot of social interaction that needs to be monitored and responded to on a nearly 24/7 basis. How do they keep up? By hiring social media moderators, of course!
Many companies contract this work out so they can focus on what they do best instead of being tethered to social media all day. The same holds true for community forums where user-generated comments need to be reviewed and approved before going live. Think how spammy and gross forums and social channels would be without moderators.
So, if you have a love for all things social media and know your way around a forum, consider putting these skills to good use as an online moderator.
$99 Social – At $99 Social their Content Specialists earn an average of $12.00/hour. How much you make depends on how much you work and how quickly you work. You should be available for at least 10 hours a week and must complete online training before you’re assigned any accounts.
Alchemic-Dream – Alchemic-Dream has a number of positions available within the gaming industry. And this includes their Community Manager job which helps rally gamers together into a respectful and engaged online community. You’ll moderate forums and interact with communities — so an interest and general knowledge of the gaming industry is a must!
BabyCenter – If you’re a parent or expecting, you’ve probably heard of BabyCenter and have hopped on their various forums to read real world advice from fellow parents. And with so many active members and communities, BabyCenter occasionally has a need for moderators to oversee user-generated content. In addition to moderator jobs, BabyCenter has other remote-friendly careers posted — so keep an eye on their
Jobs Page for the latest at-home positions here.
Crisp Thinking – Crisp hires moderators on a freelance basis to work on client projects. They always accept applications, but that doesn’t mean they’re always hiring. If they have a project you might be a good fit for, they’ll contact you for a phone interview.
Emoderation – Emoderation is known for their flexible moderation positions which include community manager, social media managers, and user generated content (UGC) moderators. While not always hiring, they will update their jobs page to indicate what openings they have at any given time.
ICUC Social – ICUC frequently has Community Manager and Content Specialist jobs available in both the U.S. and Canada. They regularly update their careers page, so make sure to check back frequently if they’re not currently hiring.
Lithium – Lithium works with some well-known brands to provide a number of different moderation services. They’re not always hiring — but it’s a good idea to browse through their
current openings to see if there are any product management positions listed.
LiveWorld – While not a requirement, it definitely helps to be bilingual to get in as a moderator at LiveWorld. Typically, they are hiring more frequently for bilingual moderators than for their general moderator position.

Scoring and Evaluation Jobs
There are a lot of options to work from home in the education industry thanks to all the different virtual schools and online tutoring services. But, these kinds of jobs aren’t the only way to earn — in fact, there are a growing number of opportunities to work from home as a scorer or evaluator.
For the most part, these positions will grade or evaluate exams, essays, and tests. Sometimes, you might have to provide written feedback — it really just depends on the company and the type of work you’re evaluating or scoring.
ACT – Remember the ACT? You can get paid to read and score student essays. To evaluate ACT essays, you’ll need to have a bachelor’s degree or higher, reside in the U.S., and teaching experience.
ETS – ETS has a number of online scoring positions. Sometimes, these are location based and other times they are for a specific subject. Check out their
job opportunities page to see what’s available at any given time.
Gradiate – Become a Gradiate Genius and earn $25/hour while helping students! Currently, Gradiate hires evaluators with experience in English — but they’ll be expanding to different subjects soon.
Literably – This is part transcription, part evaluating. You’ll listen to elementary students read out loud and note whenever they’ve made a mistake.
Measurement Inc. – You’ll need a bachelor’s degree in any field to work from home as a reader/evaluator at Measurement Inc. Each project is different and pay rate and hours required will vary too.
Pearson – Pearson is one of the largest education companies around, and they often have a number of online evaluator positions available. Check out their
scoring at home program to see what kind of projects they’re hiring for throughout the year!
WriteScore – WriteScore offers hand-scored essay services in the education industry. They will train essay scorers, but you’ll need at least a two-year degree to be considered.
Online Research
A lot of work from home jobs require you to be a savvy web researcher. But not too many make online research your full-time job. There are, however, a few companies that hire online researchers. To be great at this, you’ll definitely need to know how to Google with the best of them and know where to find reputable sources. Typically, your research will be accompanied with a well written synopsis so strong writing chops are also a must.
10EQS – 10EQS offers a number of business service solutions to a global network of clients. They also happen to have the occasional remote researcher position. Given the nature of their business, it’ll help big time if you have previous experience in one of the industries they serve. Check out their

Wonder – I did a
review about Wonder and many current and former Wonder Researchers were kind enough to chime in in the comment section — so it’s definitely a must-read if you want to work from home as an online researcher. There is the opportunity to earn up to $2,000/month at Wonder, but it might not be the right job for everyone!
Fancy Hands – Technically, this is a virtual assistant position — but hear me out.
I worked as a VA for Fancy Hands for about six months and, for the most part, the tasks I completed were web research. This includes tracking down airfare, finding information about a particular business, and creating travel itineraries — really, it was heavy on the web research. Keep in mind, there are tasks that require you to pick up the phone — but
you do not have to claim these. If you wanted, you could simply choose tasks that are researched based, there certainly are a lot of them.
Article One Partners – To date, Article One Partners has paid out more than $7 million to their researchers. You can claim a slice of this pie by registering as a researcher with them. Payouts vary by study — some are success-based and others pay a guaranteed rate.
Search Engine Evaluator
Become the human element behind search engine results when you become a search engine evaluator! These are almost always contract positions that are project-based. Some contracts last for just a few months while others can be extended for years — it really depends on the company and how well you perform.
Most of the time,
Search Engine Evaluators rate the relevancy of search results based on a query. For example, let’s say you were told someone Googled the term “apple deals” and then you were shown a page of results that discussed discounted fruit. Your job would be to rate how relevant the search results are to the original search term — in this case, probably not so relevant because someone searching for “apple deals” likely wants information on sales for iPads and iPhones, not great prices on Granny Smith apples.
Appen – Appen is a global organization with several different evaluator positions to chose from. One of their newest offerings is Social Media Evaluator where, you guessed it, you’ll be rating various social content and news feeds.
iSoftStone – I worked on a short-term project for iSoftStone. And, honestly, I have nothing bad to say. The work was too redundant for my taste, but it paid well and was really flexible. If I had to, I’d certainly sign up again. They almost always list their openings on Indeed — so be sure to check there for
iSoftStone jobs.
Leapforce – You’ll have to go through a qualification process to become a search engine evaluator at Leapforce. This usually involves some practice questions to see if you understand how to properly rate search results.
Lionbridge/The Smart Crowd – Lionbridge, aka The Smart Crowd, is a global company that offers many different online crowdsource gigs. Their search engine evaluation position isn’t always available.
Transcription
There are a lot of opportunities to work from home as a transcriptionist — and I really do mean
a lot. There’s everything from beginner-friendly options to specialized jobs that come with education requirements. If you’re not sure if a career as a transcriptionist is right for you, head on over to TranscribeAnywhere where you can take a
free mini course to see if you and transcription are a good fit.
And since there are so many transcription companies, I’m going to list only those that accept entry-level candidates. Most people reading this will be new to the world of transcription, and these companies are the perfect place to start.
AccuTranGlobal – It helps to have experience here, but it’s not a requirement. You will, however, need to pass a skills test to demonstrate you’ve got what it takes to make it as a transcriptionist. This is a good opportunity to gain a lot of experience since AccuTran works with clients in many in-demand industries like medical, legal, business, and market research.
Appen – Appen is known for their search engine evaluation positions mentioned above, but they also have plenty of transcription work to go around. I’ve been registered as a candidate with them for years and frequently get invited to work on a variety of interesting projects that go beyond transcription.
Birchcreek Communications – Birchcreek mainly deals with legal and financial clients. And while these are two areas that normally require previous experience, Birchcreek will hire you if you can pass their test.
Bam! – This is mostly entertainment-type transcription work, but there’s also the opportunity to work on legal, corporate, and general transcription projects.
CastingWords – CastingWords offers transcription work on their own platform as well as through Mechanical Turk. Mechanical Turk (MT) is a
short-task site, so you never know how much work will be available between the two sites. Either way, you only need to bank $1.00 before you can request pay out.
Crowdsurf – Crowdsurf also post their transcription jobs on Mechanical Turk. In addition to transcription jobs, you can also find captioning tasks here.
Daily Transcription – With services available 24/7, Daily Transcription offers most of their clients same day turnaround. This means there could be work available day and night — but they do not make any guarantees on the volume of work available or the amount you might make. You will need to pass a short test to get in here.
Get Transcribed – There are both transcription and reviewer positions here. Transcribers earn $0.23/audio minute and reviewers receive $0.12/audio minute. You’ll need to earn at least $10.00 a month to request your payments through PayPal.
GMR Transcription – GMR Transcription offers general transcription, medical transcription, and interpretation services. You don’t need any experience, but you must be a U.S. resident to apply. has general transcription positions available consistently.
Neal R. Gross – If you’re looking to break into legal transcription, this might be a good place to start. While you don’t need prior experience, you will need to type at least 60 WPM and be able to commit to 30 hours a week with the ability to return files the next day after they’re assigned to you.
RNK Transcription – To apply at RNK, you’ll need to email them your resume. No experience required — but you will need to pass the skills test.
Scribie – Scribie hires new typists from around the world. There is a wait list — so you cannot just jump right in here. The pay rate is low, but may be a good place to try your hand at transcription or used as a way to supplement your income.
Tigerfish – You’ll have to get through three five-minute tests to be considered at Tigerfish. In total, the tests should take about 20 minutes to complete.
Transcriptions ‘N’ Translations – Transcription ‘N’ Translations works with companies like Discovery Channel and Animal Planet — so if you get in here, you could be transcribing entertainment-related files for these big-name channels!
TranscribeMe! – If you’re bilingual, you’ll have double chances to earn at TranscribeMe! But you don’t need to be fluent in multiple languages to get started. Just take their transcription test and, if you pass, someone will contact you within a couple days to discuss the next steps.
Ubiqus – Ubiqus hires English-speaking U.S. residents for projects ranging from medical transcription to summary writing. You’ll need to make it through their application process before you receive paid work.
1-888-TYPE-IT-UP – This company has one of the highest rates for new typists. They’re not always hiring, but you can fill out the short questionnaire to submit your information. They will contact you to take a transcription test when they are looking for new contractors.
Verbal Ink – Verbal Ink will consider new typists who can pass their test. This test is known to be difficult — but is worth a shot if you’re looking for a chance to get in with a company that typically has steady work available.
3Play Media – There are a series of tests you’ll need to pass to become a transcriptionist at 3Play Media. The pay rate varies per project, but most transcriptionists earn between $10.00 and $30.00 per hour.
